Education CS Machogu says investigations are underway following the death of KCPE candidates who drowned at Eldoret dam
The Ministry of Education has intervened in a tragic incident in which five pupils set to write their Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) drowned in Eldoret.
The five who were pupils at Arap Moi Primary School in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, had gone to the Amazement Park for a merry-making session and prayers ahead of KCPE exams on Monday, October 30.
Accompanied by their teachers, the students were said to have gone for a boat ride in a man-made dam where they met their tragic ends after their boat capsized.
On board, the ill-fated vessel with the candidates was another class six pupil who was set to sit for the KAPSEA examinations.
Weighing in on the matter, CS Ezekiel Machogu said he had sanctioned an investigation into the matter to establish the cause of the tragedy.
“I am working closely with my counterpart in the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, Prof. Kithure Kindiki, to ensure thorough and conclusive investigations are conducted into the unfortunate incident.
CS Machogu expressed his remorse for losing the candidates just days to the exams, vowing to get to the bottom of the matter.

“I wish a quick recovery to the Grade Six candidate who is currently hospitalized following the incident, appropriate action will be taken on the basis of the findings of the investigations,” said Machogu.
The CS went ahead to counsel teachers and parents to take care of their children during this season in which they will be sitting for their transitional examinations.
While commiserating with the bereaved families, Machogu stated that the government was committed to the safety of the candidates.
“Teachers, parents, and guardians are advised to avoid exposing learners to risky activities and environments, especially during the national examinations season. As the investigations into the tragedy continue, I wish to appeal for calm and patience from the affected schools, families, and communities.
I wish to assure everyone that the Government will take all the necessary measures to ensure the safety of candidates across the country during the 2023 national examinations season,” added the CS.
