Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen has revealed that the government will be pushing for enhanced intelligence gathering at universities to deal with drug abuse.
Speaking during the launch of the report on the status of drugs and substance use among university students on Thursday, February 13, Murkomen directed Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to enhance the operations of police stations near universities.
He expressed that intelligence gathering and reports would be crucial in protecting students from drug peddlers.
“We want intelligence officers to work with the universities, the university students and the police officers so that we get proper intelligence and interventions in dealing with drug abuse, especially with cannabis, heroin and cocaine,” the CS remarked.
The CS also noted that the government would investigate students to extend their stay at universities.

Murkomen stated that some of the students being targeted were often rich students who held critical leadership positions at the universities.
According to the CS, some of these students were engaged in drug trafficking.
Additionally, he put politicians who ferry university students to political rallies on notice.
“To the politicians who bribe our youth with alcohol and other substances to heckle their opponents at meetings, you are hurting our anti-drugs campaign and we are coming for you,” he stated.
“For their part, universities must remain safe havens for our young people by ensuring their all-round wellbeing through stronger psychosocial support, while parents and other guardians should keep a close eye on their children.”
