Migori Senator Eddy Oketch has called for the impeachment of National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula following his controversial ruling on the majority side in the August House.
In a statement on Wednesday, February 12, Oketch accused Wetangula of violating the Constitution, arguing that the ruling constitutes grounds for impeachment.
He called on MPs to take decisive action on the matter and initiate an impeachment motion against the Speaker.
“Violation of the constitution is the highest impeachable offense. Even without the speaker’s contemptuous ruling in response to the court declaration, Wetang’ula stands impeachable on the basis of violating the constitution at the very beginning. Any bold MP in the National Assembly should initiate his impeachment motion,” he stated.
On Wednesday afternoon, Wetang’ula ruled that the Kenya Kwanza coalition is the majority side in the National Assembly.
He ruled that the Kenya Kwanza side has 165 members comprising members elected on UDA, Amani National Congress (ANC), and Ford Kenya among other parties.

On the other hand, Wetangula stated that the Azimio la Umoja coalition was the minority side with 154 members.
He stated that parties considered to be part of Azimio were ODM, Wiper Party, and Jubilee among others, adding that there were 12 independent MPs and 4 vacancies yet to be filled.
“The Kenya Kwanza Coalition is the majority party of the House while Azimio la Umoja is the minority party of the House,” Wetang’ula ruled.
Following the ruling, MPs affiliated with Azimio La Umoja walked out of parliament, and later converged in the media room, where they addressed the press to express their displeasure with Wetangula’s ruling.
