Gunmen attack police station, kill one officer, injure two others and steal two rifles

Armed assailants attacked Musanda Police Station in Mumias West, Kakamega County, on Friday night, leaving three officers and a civilian injured and stealing two G3 rifles loaded with ammunition.

Police Constable Brian Kipngetich, in a report recorded at 9pm, said that while inside his house within the patrol base, six individuals riding on two motorcycles arrived at the station claiming that their motorcycle had been stolen at Sigomere.

Shortly after making the report, a commotion was heard at the police station, followed by a gunshot. Kipngetich said one of the attackers remarked that “there is another one” before he was shot on the left side of the head and retreated back to his house.

The Officer Commanding Station (OCS) and other officers then responded to the scene at Mukhuwa Location, and found Corporal Richard Utolo unconscious, lying in a pool of blood with a visible wound on the chin. He was rushed to the hospital and is presently admitted in a serious condition.

Kipngetich sustained a slight head injury, while Police Constable Finace Abura suffered a wound to the left ear. His wife, Mary Omondi, sustained injuries to the head and right hand during the incident.

Police reported that two G3 rifles were stolen during the attack, each rifle loaded with 20 rounds of ammunition.

The police officers were taken to Bungoma West Hospital where they were admitted and are receiving treatment.

The scene was visited by the Sub-County Police Commander (SCPC) and the Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer (SCCIO) Mumias West.

Blood stains were observed in the officers’ houses, and two crowbars believed to have been used to break into a steel box were recovered.

Police said a search for the stolen rifles and spent cartridges is ongoing, as investigations are continuing.
