Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko makes startling revelations about how he used to be offered KSh 50m bribe daily when he was governor of Nairobi

Speaking during a radio interview, Sonko disclosed that he was offered a staggering KSh 50 million in cash bribes daily from the county revenue collection centre.

He recounted how he brought this corruption to the attention of former president Uhuru Kenyatta, seeking to combat the systemic graft.

“I went to the state house and told President Uhuru Kenyatta that I had been offered KSh 50 million bribes to take home and it would be coming daily. He did not believe it but then went ahead to call his then-deputy William Ruto. I wanted to fight corruption,” said Sonko.

In response, Uhuru took decisive action, dispatching officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to investigate the source of the funds.

He also provided Sonko with recording devices to gather evidence. “That day, some minutes before 4 pm, we surrounded guys and recovered KSh 70 million. The guys stocked money in their socks, undies, and paper bags and that was the main revenue collection centre and there were other centres. So in total, it was around KSh 300 million, but the governor was being given KSh 50 million,” he added.

Sonko’s disclosures prompted the national government to initiate an online revenue collection platform, aiming to curb corruption in the system.

Despite his efforts, Sonko expressed bewilderment at being linked to corruption cases, asserting his dedication to the county’s welfare and denying any embezzlement of public funds.

He argued that his innocence would eventually be known, stating that the court found him innocent hence his acquittal in most corruption cases.
