Interior CS Murkomen sends message to Kenyans as protests kick off in Nairobi CBD

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has assured Kenyans of their safety as youth prepare to stage protests in memory of the Gen Zs who lost their lives on June 25, 2024.

In a statement on Wednesday, June 25, CS Murkomen said the government is committed to protecting Kenyans and their livelihoods during the protests.

The Interior CS also urged Kenyans who will come out to protest to be peaceful and do it by the law.

“As you go about your daily activities, be assured that your safety and the protection of your livelihoods are our top priority.

“For those who will turn up to exercise their constitutional right to demonstrate, we urge them to do so peacefully and unarmed as provided for in our laws. Peace is the foundation for a strong and prosperous Nation; let us all join hands to uphold it,” Murkomen stated.

The Interior CS’s statement comes even as police officers have barricaded major roads leading to the Nairobi CBD.

The police have blocked Parliament Road with razor-sharp barbed wire to prevent members of the public from using it.

Ngong Road has been blocked at City Mortuary roundabout, Lang’ata Road at T-Mall, Uhuru Highway at Haile Selassie roundabout, and Jogoo Road at Makongeni.

The police have also blocked Waiyaki Way at the Kangemi flyover, and Thika Road has been blocked at Muthaiga.

There is also a heavy police presence deployed along Kenyatta Avenue, Moi Avenue, and at the National Archives.

Meanwhile, the protests have kicked off in Nairobi CBD, with hundreds of protestors already in Moi Avenue to celebrate those who were killed in the June 25, 2024, anti-government protests.

Anti-riot police officers have already lobbed teargas canisters at the protestors who had gone to the Central Police Station.

On the other hand, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa led opposition leaders to lay a wreath of flowers in honour of the Gen Z protesters.
