Journalist Fatma Rajab of Mo Radio station dies just a day after sending a Ksh2 million plea for medical costs

Journalist Fatma Rajab of Mo Radio station dies just a day after sending a Ksh2 million plea for medical costs.

Nyali MP Mohammed Ali is mourning the death of Mombasa-based journalist Fatma Rajab who had been suffering from rheumatic heart disease.

Rajab, a staff member of Mo Radio, which is owned by Nyali MP Mohammed Ali, was laid to rest a day after her family requested Ksh2 million so that she could receive medical care in India.

Ali, known as Moha Jicho Pevu, mourned Fatma Rajad, as a talented professional whose death dealt a blow to the local media outlet.

“It is with great sadness that we grieve the loss of our very own Mo Radio intern Ms Fatma Rajab- a talented and dedicated young professional whose presence made a remarkable difference to all those around her both at the station, in her community circle, and on air,” announced Ali.

“Ms. Fatma suffered from Rheumatic Heart Disease and was undergoing treatment at Coast General Hospital when she passed on. I send my deepest condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues.”

Mo Radio later said in a statement that the family had asked for Ksh2 million from well-wishers to help pay for her medical care in India.

In a statement released on Friday, a medical officer from the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital (CGTRH) disclosed that Rajad, 27, had malformed valves and had been afflicted with the illness since she was 14 years old.

She had the abnormality corrected surgically in India, but the replacement valve eventually failed.

Rajab again suffered the condition on Thursday and was rushed to a hospital in Kiembeni from where she was transferred to CGTRH where she was moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Before, her family had been recommended to transfer her to another hospital in Nairobi where the surgery was valued at Ksh1.8 million.

CGTRH medical officer, however, told the family that the surgery could be done at Ksh1 million.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), rheumatic heart disease starts as ‘a sore throat from a bacterium called Streptococcus pyogenes (group A streptococcus)’

The bacterium can pass easily from person to person in the same way as other upper respiratory tract infections. In severe cases, it can cause the lungs to collapse.
