Kenya Power launches smart electricity metres to monitor service

Kenya Power has today launched smart metres to improve services to achieve efficiency in service delivery.

The smart electricity meters were launced in Meru as as Kenya Power seeks to achieve efficiency in service delivery.

The smart meters, according to Mount Kenya Regional Manager Phineas Kimathi, will record electricity consumption, voltage levels, and other data.

The meters, according to Kimathi, will allow Kenya Power to monitor the service and bill customers without having to dispatch employees to do so.

He stated that if the supply is cut off, the reconnection will occur immediately once the payment is paid.

“We have installed 300 smart meters for SMEs in Meru and we will put around 400 more. We plan to install them to households too,” said Mr Marete.

During a sensitization forum in Makutano, Kimathi expressed sadness that some people had placed illegal lines in order to defraud the company of money.

According to Kimathi, in the past financial area, illicit connections were responsible for at least one death in Meru and three others in the Mount Kenya region.

People who were developing bypasses were admonished by Kimathi to avoid invoicing.

Improper connections and meter tampering, he claimed, were a threat.
