President Ruto says Kenya will cease to import food in the next 10 years adding that his administration is boosting production

President Ruto says Kenya will cease to import food in the next 10 years adding that his administration is boosting production.

Speaking on Wednesday while laying the groundwork for the Nanyuki Affordable Housing Project, Ruto underlined the need of food production independence for the country in an effort to reduce import expenses.

According to Ruto, Kenya now imports food at a cost of roughly Ksh. 500 billion yearly.

He stated that his government is aiming to increase production so that Kenya can rely entirely on its agricultural production capacity.

“We are spending almost Ksh.500 billion every year to import food from other countries. In 5 years, we want to reduce the margin from Ksh.500 billion to Ksh. 250 billion and in 10 years, we will no longer be importing any food, we will be producing our own,” he said.

President Ruto noted the emphasis his administration placed on providing farmers with cheaper access to fertilizer in order to increase their output.

According to the president, Kenya anticipates 40% higher harvests this year than it did last.

“The only way to lower the cost of living and increase food production is to help farmers produce more food to get rid of famine,” he said.

“We reduced fertiliser prices and one bag that was costing Ksh.7000 is now going at Ksh.2500 …We are also lucky that this year we have gotten 40% more harvest than the last year.”

In addition, the president promised to solve dairy farmers’ problems with low and untimely payments.

Ruto stated that the government would dismantle cartels through the Kenya Co-operative Creameries (KCC) and guarantee that milk producers receive payment within a 15-day period starting in June.

He noted that in order to increase and mechanize manufacturing, the State had received Ksh. 37 billion from India.
