Kisumu County to ban burials in estates under city jurisdiction

Kisumu residents who live in estates within the city will no longer bury their loved ones in their homes in the County’s new city plan.

Kisumu City Manager Abala Wanga has affirmed that the ban effective in seven wards that fall under the jurisdiction of the city remains in force.

Wanga said those living in Migosi, Nyalenda, Kondele, Kaloleni, Shauri moyo, Railways, Market Milimani, Manyatta B and Mamboleo areas will not be allowed to conduct burials in the estates.

Wanga said the city has now dedicated Mamboleo cemetery, Muslim cemetery and Hindu crematorium as the official places of disposing bodies of loved ones.

“The city is growing and most of these parcels are becoming commercial properties,” said the City manager on Saturday.

He says any breach of the notice will make one liable to prosecution in a court of law.

Speaking in Nyawita, Wanga said the city will keep on sensitizing the locals in those areas to ensure that the directive is adhered to.

He referred to a March 2021 circular that urged change in burial rituals to accommodate city growth.
