Museveni apologises to Ruto, Kenyans over son’s (General Muhoozi Kainerugaba) controversial remarks.
Following his son General Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s comments that raised controversy and war on social media, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni issued a public apology to Kenyans and President William Ruto.
In a statement dated Wednesday, October 5, Museveni claimed that he had privately apologized to President William Ruto for his son’s actions.
It was improper, according to Museveni, for his son to weigh in on the Kenyan elections by suggesting that former President Uhuru Kenyatta should have run for a third term.
“Dear Ugandans, the brotherly people of Kenya, and all East Africans. I greet all of you. I ask our Kenyan brothers and sisters to forgive us for the tweets sent by General Muhoozi,” he stated. “It is not correct for Public officers, be they civilian or military, to comment or interfere in any way, in the internal affairs of brother countries,” he added.
He went on: “The only available legitimate forum is the Peer Review Mechanism of the African Union or confidential interactions among us or EAC and AU fora –not public comments.”
Museveni’s apology comes after Uganda’s army issued a statement on Muhoozi’s remarks on invading Kenya.
The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) pronounced itself on the matter maintaining that there are no plans to invade Kenya.
“We have three methods of communication. One, we have the internal method. Externally, it is through my office and the Ministry of Defence.
“No general can declare war except the head of state and Parliament,” he stated.
The spokesperson further reiterated that Uganda would work towards fostering cooperation between the two countries despite the diplomatic quagmire that had been posed by Muhoozi’s tweets.
