Museveni sues Raila Odinga’s allies at EAC Court in Tanzania by Ugandan Businessman Paul Bamutaze over ‘dictator’ remarks.
Seven Raila Odinga allies and MPs have been sued at the East African Court of Justice (EACJ) for allegedly referring to Yoweri Museveni as a dictator.
The MPs include Junet Mohamed, a close ally to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Others are Opiyo Wandayi, who has been fronted as Majority Leader in Kenya’s current Parliament, Antony Otieno, Fatuma Abdi, Jared Okelo, Millie Odhiambo, and Caleb Amisi.
The seven, all members of ODM, Raila’s party, were dragged to the regional court over comments made in August 2021 implying that Museveni was operating as a dictator.
The case was filed by Paul Bamutaze, a Ugandan businessman and close ally of Museveni’s National Resistance Movement (NRM) Party. NRM has been in power for 36 years.
Also joined in the case the suit kicked off on Tuesday, September 20, is the Office of the Attorney General in Kenya as the respondent.
In court papers, the businessman sought to have the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leaders who were named alongside Mohamed be sanctioned for undermining Uganda’s ruling party.
“I wish to retaliate that Museveni is an elected Leader and not a dictator as stated by Junet Mohamed and others!
“We shall protect our President Museveni, NRM party, William Ruto (Kenya’s President), and the East African Community, against such attacks that derail the advancement towards a political federation of the EAC as EACJ commences hearing into my matter against the ODM Party,” Bamutaze said.
He added: “The case against ODM MPs utterances against Yoweri Museveni and Muhoozi Kainerugaba (Museveni’s son) kicked off today at the EACJ in Arusha!
“You don’t attack the person of the President of the Republic of Uganda. You don’t attack the ruling political party because you want to make the news. That can turn out to be a serious diplomatic blunder,” added Bamutaze.
Raila Odinga’s allies had questioned Ruto’s relationship with Museveni after the former deputy president was blocked by the state from traveling to Uganda last year.
The MPs said at a public rally then, that Museveni’s government had a wanting reputation for human rights violations.
