A police officer and four others arrested impersonating EACC detective to raid home of a government official.

A police officer is among five individuals set to be presented to court today for impersonating officials from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

The five were arrested in Kitui Town on July 19 while conducting a fake search operation at the residence of a senior county official, pretending to be EACC Detectives.

They were subsequently charged with numerous offences, including impersonating EACC investigators and conspiracy to commit a felony.

Other charges were abducting with intent to confine, forgery, uttering a false document, attempts to extort by threats, and being in possession of suspected stolen property.

The police officer in question is an official attached to the National Police Service and is currently deployed at Muthangari Police Station.

The four were accused of searching the home of the Kitui County Director of Revenue with the intention to extort.

As a result, the quintet is set to be presented before the Kitui Anti-Corruption Court.

The court is expected to consider a pre-bail report in determining whether or not to release the accused persons on bail.

Section 34 of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act criminalises attempts by the public to impersonate EACC officials and carries a jail term of up to three years.

“No person other than an investigator shall represent himself to be or act as an investigator, and a person who contravenes this section is guilty of an offence and is liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding three hundred thousand shillings or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years, or to both,” reads the Act.

In May this year, a woman was also arrested for conning government officials and contractors while pretending to be an officer from EACC.

She promised to get her victims out of trouble and demanded a bribe large enough to satisfy herself and her bosses.

“In her negotiations, she says that the amount should be sufficient enough for sharing upwards with her alleged bosses at EACC and deep networks she pretends to have at the ODPP and the Anti-Corruption Court,” EACC Spokesperson told the press at the time.
