The Muthaiga home of prominent Nairobi businessman Jimi Wanjigi was Friday a scene of tense encounter between the police and his family members after a contingent of heavily armed officers stormed the residence seeking to arrest him.
In a video shared on social media, the voice of a woman believed to be Wanjigi’s wife is heard pleading with the police officers, who raided her home, not to shoot and kill her.
“Don’t shoot me, don’t shoot me in my house,” she pleaded repeatedly.
According to Wanjigi’s lawyer, Willis Otieno, his client’s family members were woken up at 6 am on Friday by armed men who forced their way into several rooms.
Otieno claimed the men were wearing balaclavas and pointed guns at Wanjigi’s family members after forcing them out of their rooms.

“At 6 am, my clients were woken up by marauding men who burst into their rooms wearing balaclavas and carrying assault rifles. They forced them out of their rooms, pointed guns at them, tore things in the house and claimed they were searching,” Otieno said.
The lawyer wondered why they had to conduct a fresh search after a similar one had been conducted at the residence on Thursday night.
“How can the same police that had searched all night come at 6 am and claim to be conducting a fresh search?” he asked.
On Thursday, acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli ordered Wanjigi to surrender to police.
Masengeli said police intercepted a vehicle outside the businessman’s home and recovered several items from the vehicle, including four canisters of tear gas and police communication equipment.
