Police respond over reports two people were arrested sleeping in Ruto’s bed at State House

Police have denied reports that two persons were arrested sleeping in President William Ruto’s bed in State House Mombasa

Police have denied reports that two persons were arrested sleeping in President William Ruto’s bed in State House Mombasa.

According to a screenshot that was circulated online on Sunday, November 17, 2024, two people identified as Maina and Muthoni were found sleeping in the king-size bed before they were arrested.

The reports further noted that guards were alerted after the cooks heard loud ‘snoring’ sounds coming from the bedroom.

“Thieves Maina & Muthoni arrested sleeping in President Ruto’s King Size bed at State House Mombasa. They broke in from an open window just to feel how comfortable a President’s bed is they said. No other items were damaged or stolen. Guards were alerted after the cooks heard loud ‘snoring’ sounds coming from the bedroom,” the fake screenshot noted.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has dismissed the poster as “fake news”, without issuing further information about the same.

Under normal circumstances, State House is classified as a protected area under the Protected Areas Act, hence it is a tall order for felonies to access such facilities.

In 2019, a 25-year-old university student tried to access the State House in Nairobi through the fence armed with a knife, forcing security officers to shoot him.

Brian Kibet Bera, then a student at JKUAT and armed with a knife was shot as he tried to scale the wall through Gate B.

“He drew out a knife which prompted officers to fire at him where he sustained a gunshot wound on the left shoulder plate,” a police report read in part.

State Houses and State Lodges, which are the president’s official residences, are guarded by an elite team from the General Service Unit (GSU) who provide round-the-clock security in the area.

Also, there is a special squad of snipers around the main building, both in civilian and uniform.
