A man suspected to be a protester was shot and killed by a police officer during demonstrations in Nairobi’s Central Business District on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.

The protests were part of ongoing calls for justice over the death of teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang.

Graphic images showed the man lying motionless on the ground as fellow demonstrators look on in shock.

Earlier footage captured the man in conversation with two police officers.

Moments later, an altercation broke out, during which one of the officers opened fire, fatally shooting the man.

The shooting has sparked fresh outrage, adding to public anger already inflamed by Ojwang’s controversial death while in police custody.

In addition, a gang temporarily foiled a protest calling for the resignation of Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat. 

The anti-Lagat protestors who were marching in Nairobi CBD had to scamper for safety as the gangs on boda boda accosted them.

The camp which arrived in gusto on several motorbikes cornered the protesters who were peacefully marching towards the Central Police Station at the University Way intersection and disrupted the protest.

The anti-Lagat protesters had to disappear in thin air leaving the rival camp to take control and rule as they whisked away and flogging the defiant remnants on the road.

Police cars and officers could be seen witnessing how the gangs were chasing and roughing up protesters.

Earlier on, police had lobbed teargas canisters to disperse the crowd which had gathered at the Nation Centre where rage started.

The tension has since paralysed business activities within the town with shops already closed.
