Raila declines invitation to share podium with Ruto at National prayer breakfast

Azimio leader Raila Odinga and all coalition's top members to skip national prayer breakfast citing lack of honesty from Ruto's side

Azimio leader Raila Odinga and all coalition’s top members to skip national prayer breakfast citing lack of honesty from Ruto’s side.

Azimio leader Raila Odinga has declined an invitation to attend the National Prayer Breakfast scheduled for Wednesday.

While acknowledging receiving the invitation, the top Azimio leaders said their experience in sharing a podium with President William Ruto-led government side made it difficult for them to attend the event.

“If past events where we have shared platforms with Kenya Kwanza are to serve as guide, Azimio is convinced that the National Prayer Breakfast does not offer the environment the country needs for humility before God, honesty with citizens and respect between leaders,” Azimio said in a statement to the media.

Azimio pointed out that Kenya Kwanza leadership had in the past exhibited arrogance and gave false hopes to Kenyans.

“The event will dishonour God and country with a display of arrogance, superiority battles, false hopes to citizens and vitriolic post-event mischaracterisation and misinterpretation of intentions by well-known Kenya Kwanza leaders. We have therefore declined the invitation to the breakfast,” the statement read.

The opposition noted that currently, the country requires honest and open talks on issues affecting the country.

“The party, we believe the times require that as a country, we should approach our Creator and the Protector of our nation with honesty and humility and also talk to our people truthfully, frankly and boldly on the issues facing the nation today,” Azimio stated.

The outfit, however, said Azimio members of Parliament are free to attend the prayer service.

The event is aimed at helping unite the country by bringing together leaders from diverse sectors of society and fostering an inclusive environment where they can unite in prayer for the nation’s welfare.
