Raila moves to counter Ruto’s growing influence in the coast region after the president’s visit.
Days after President William Ruto’s visit, ODM leader Raila Odinga has landed in Mombasa for a series of political events.
The Azimioleader arrived at the Coastal city Thursday night and was received by Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir.
“Welcome to Mombasa Baba. I welcomed my party leader at Moi International Airport ahead of his visit for the next few days,” the governor twitted.
However, Raila made no mention of the specific places he planned to visit.
“Touchdown Mombasa, it feels awesome being back home. Happy New Year folks,” Raila said.

Raila’s visit comes a few days after President Ruto traversed parts of the region and held meetings with leaders.
Ruto was received by Nassir and Kilifi governor Gideon Mung’aro.
Nassir and Mung’aro, who were elected on the ODM platform, accompanied Ruto during his visit and to public events including his tour of Galana Kulalu.
Some ODM stalwarts felt that the two governors were becoming too cozy with President William Ruto.
On Thursday, ODM party officials released a statement cautioning governors not to fall for the President’s political ploys despite their freedom to collaborate with him.
According to the party, elected governors, MPs, senators, and MCAs are free to collaborate with the executive branch of government to the extent that doing so benefits their constituents.
“We don’t always tell our members what to do because we believe that as elected leaders, they know what is right and wrong,” ODM secretary general Edwin Sifuna said.
