Raila Odinga cheekily shares a photo of a dilapidated wheelbarrow depicting the “State of the Nation” as a critique to the government.

The leader of the Azimio party, Raila Odinga, has continued to criticize President William Ruto’s administration over the high cost of living and other challenges plaguing the country.

On his social media platforms, Raila mockingly posted a picture of a run-down wheelbarrow and compared it to the status of the country today.

As the “Hustler” during his campaign, Ruto positioned himself as the voice of the nation’s underprivileged, which is why his United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party chose a wheelbarrow as its emblem.

The majority of the areas thought to be Ruto’s strongholds had wheelbarrows hoisted at numerous retail centers in the lead-up to the vote on August 9.

The wheelbarrow was a common thing to spot especially in Central Kenya and Rift Valley.

On his inauguration on Tuesday, 13, 2022, Ruto’s Presidential Standard had a wheelbarrow.

By doing so, Ruto was keen to demonstrate his resolve to uplift people in the lower carder as outlined in his bottom-up economic model.

On Thursday, June 8, Raila highlighted areas of significant concern in the contentious Finance Bill 2023 urging to drop the proposal entirely.

The Azimio leader then issued Ruto with 10 fresh demands as pressure piled on the government to drop the bill.

“Ruto wants to levy taxes on chama or merry-go-rounds. Merry go-rounds are the bankers and lenders of last resort for our mothers and youth, particularly in rural areas and slums. Without offering any services to the Chamas, women groups, and trade associations, Ruto has decided they must pay taxes,” explained the ODM leader.

According to Raila, this strikes at the heart of women’s economy, it kills savings and spreads poverty among an already vulnerable group.

“We have noted that the regime has run out of sound bites and explanations for these proposals and has resorted to threats. But we have agreed with our MPs on what to do: vote against any tax rises,” Raila added.
