President William Ruto has appointed Dr Wenwa Akinyi Oranga Odinga, the sister to the former Prime Minister Raila Odinga as the chair of the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute(KEMRI) Board.

In a Gazette Notice issued Friday, November 2024, the President appointed Oranga to the position for the next three years starting yesterday.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 6 (1) (a) of the State Corporations Act, as read together with Section 16 (2) and the Fourth Schedule of the Science, Technology, and Innovation Act, 2013.

“I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defense Forces, appoint Dr Wenwa Akinyi Oranga to be the Chairperson of the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute,” the notice read.

Oranga has been appointed to head the board, which undertakes research in marine and freshwater fisheries, aquaculture, environmental and ecological studies, and marine research.

This is not her first appointment in a lucrative job. In 2023, Governor Gladys Wanga nominated her to the Public Service and Revenue Board members of the Homa Bay County Assembly.

In 2021, she also landed a job in the retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s government, following an appointment by the then Health CS Mutahi Kagwe to sit on the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) board as a member.

Oranga is the daughter of the late Jaramogi’s first wife, Mary Ajuma, who’s also Raila’s mother.

She is the third born in her immediate family after her brothers Oburu Oginga and the former prime minister.

According to a 2015 Nation interview, Wenwa was the first Kenyan woman to obtain a doctorate in chemistry.

She is also a trustee of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation and Pan Africa Petroleum Limited.

Going by her LinkedIn page, Dr Oranga has served as a Consul General, a senior diplomatic officer who heads a consulate in a foreign country, and as a senior lecturer at the University of Nairobi for 13 years.

She has also worked as a senior assistant secretary for the Commission for University Education and a chief chemist at the Pyrethrum Board of Kenya.
