Ruto volunteers to mediate warring factions in the Sudan war

Ruto offers to arbitrate warring factions in the Sudan conflict, the Army, and Rapid Support Forces (RSF)

Ruto offers to arbitrate warring factions in the Sudan conflict, the Army, and Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

On Friday, April 21, President William Ruto offered to host mediation meetings between opposing sides in the Sudan war.

The Head of State emphasized the need for peace in the Horn of Africa in a communique, pointing out that the conflict threatened neighboring countries.

Ruto, therefore, urged the rival generals Abdel Fattah Abdelrahman al-Burhan and Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo to take advantage of the chance provided by the Kenyan government to resolve their conflict.

“To support further progress in the peaceful resolution of the conflict in Sudan, Kenya hereby offers to host a process of mediation between the parties to the agreement.

“We make this offer in the spirit of brotherhood, peace, and solidarity as an acceptable neutral venue and also as an engaged stakeholder well-seized with the challenges facing our region,” read the statement in part.

Consequently, he called on the international community to help support the process.

The worrying factions had signaled a cease-fire in response IGAD Heads of States and Government Summit that was held on Sunday, April 16.

“We invite the parties to take full advantage of this opportunity and urge IGAD, the African Union (AU), and the United Nations (UN) to mobilize an effective international coalition to support a comprehensive peacemaking agenda for Sudan.

“Kenya has a strong track record in effectively facilitating peacemaking and settlement of the political conflict,” Ruto stated.

Fierce clashes between the Sudanese military and the paramilitary (Rapid Support Forces-RSF), erupted last week, raising fears of a wider conflict in the chaos-stricken nation.

The Sudanese army said fighting broke out after RSF troops tried to attack its forces in the southern part of the capital.
