People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has likened President William Ruto’s leadership to the oppressive practices experienced under colonial rule, asserting that his governance has inflicted severe hardships on ordinary Kenyans.

Speaking when the united opposition toured Machakos on Monday, October 6, 2025, Karua criticised the state of public services, highlighting deficiencies in healthcare provision under SHA, which she said has left citizens struggling to access treatment.

Karua further accused President Ruto of undermining civil servants’ welfare, claiming that deductions from salaries have been handled harshly, drawing parallels to the arbitrary control exercised by colonial administrators.

“We are saying that Ruto should serve only one term because he has ruined our health. We cannot access treatment under the Social Health Scheme, and even when we go with our payslips, Ruto deducts funds unfairly, just as the colonialists did,” Karua stated.

She urged her supporters to back a “one term” presidency for Ruto, insisting that the current leadership should not continue beyond the current term.

“That is why Ruto must be a one-term president,” she said

Earlier, Karua had claimed that the Kenya Kwanza administration was deliberately creating insecurity to distract the public.

Addressing the hundreds who received them in Masii, Karua also called for unity among opposition forces in the region, emphasising that collaboration is essential to challenge what she described as a corrupt and unaccountable government.

She singled out Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, warning that he should not be underestimated and must be supported as a key figure for the 2027 elections.

“We must continue supporting Kalonzo; he is not a man to be taken lightly or toyed with. Why do we say Ruto must be a one-term president? Why have we all come together as the united opposition here in Ukambani? If we do not unite and work together, this president will rob us; he is a thief,” Martha added.

Karua stressed that her party, PLP, is committed to mobilising a united front, insisting that only through collective action can citizens reclaim their rights and hold leaders accountable.

She also reiterated her party’s pledge to continue building alliances until the opposition succeeds in presenting a credible alternative government in 2027.

“That is why, under my party, the Peoples Liberation Party, we are committed to uniting and liberating the people. I promise we will continue building alliances until the very end,” Karua added.
