School heads in Kiambu and Murang’a counties warned of criminal action should they allow students to ever again block the presidential motorcade

School heads in Kiambu and Murang’a counties warned of criminal action should they allow students to ever again block the presidential motorcade.

Days after students from different schools in Kiambu’s Gatundu South and Lari constituencies blocked President William Ruto’s convoy during his three-day development trip in the Mount Kenya region, Central Regional Commissioner Fredrick Shisia issued a warning to the school heads.

A letter dated February 14, 2024, highlighted that teachers intentionally mobilized students to block Ruto’s motorcade to pursue favours.

A few school buses are said to have been stopped by police while transporting hired goons to the Head of State’s event during the same tour that traversed through the counties of Kiambu, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, and Nyeri.

At the same time, students in uniform were ferried to Kinale market’s presidential function in the Lari constituency during learning hours without any invitation and or authority.

“The students of Kirenga Girls Secondary, Kirenga Boys, Technical High School, and Kirenga Primary School blocked the presidential motorcade while en route to the venue of a presidential function. These students were intentionally mobilized by teachers for reasons best known to them.

Students of Munyuini Secondary School lined along a route H.E the President was using, waving placards which were intended to seek favours from the President despite prior caution that they should not portray such,” the letter addressed to the management of learning institutions read.

“Buses of Muhoho High School, St Rita Wamwangi High School, and Muthiga Girls Secondary School were intercepted by police while ferrying hired goons to a presidential function. Students in school uniform were ferried to a venue of presidential function at Kinale market during learning hours without any invitation and or authority,” the letter.

According to Shisia, the activities portray deviation from established norms of head teachers defying valid instructions, inculcating deviant behaviour in children, and promoting extortion, and further breaking the law.

“Head teachers will henceforth be held individually culpable for any breach, and criminal charges will be preferred against any one of them in case of compelling evidence for the offence of blocking the presidential motorcade and endangering the safety of learners,” warned Shisia.
