At least six people, believed to be tourists, have been confirmed dead in a horrific crash along the Ol Jororok–Nakuru road on Monday, June 9.

The afternoon incident saw a vehicle ferrying a group believed to be tourists lose control, rolling several times before eventually landing in a ditch.

Among the deceased in the accident, which took place in the Gichaka area, were four men, one woman and a child.

Photos and videos of the incident showed that the bus had its roof torn off, illustrating the force and impact it was subjected to as it rolled before landing in the ditch.

A further 27 people sustained serious injuries from the crash and were rushed to a nearby health facility in critical condition.

Nyandarua County Commissioner Abdlisack Jardesa confirmed the incident, adding that the victims were en route to a hotel in Nyahururu, where they would transit before continuing their journey.

“We have confirmed that six people have died in the accident. However, we are still working to establish their nationalities. The injured survivors are receiving treatment at Nyahururu Hospital, and we will provide updates as more details come in,” Jardesa said.

Eyewitnesses recounted how the bus was smoothly moving along the road when it suddenly lost control moments after it started raining.

According to a witness account, the bus rolled several times before being forced to a halt after hitting a tree.

Investigations into the crash have since been launched, with adverse weather and possible human error being at the forefront of the most likely causes of the fatal crash.

Incidentally, this was the second fatal accident reported on Monday, coming just hours after a Metrotrans matatu lost control before veering off the road along Kiambu Road.

While it remains unclear what caused the crash, Kiambu Road, particularly the area from DCI headquarters towards Karura Forest, is a hot spot for accidents.

Motorists are often advised to exercise caution when driving around this area, as the road features both winding sections and a dangerously steep slope, which heightens the risk of fatal accidents in the event of careless driving.
