Sonko defends DP Gachagua as he threatens Sakaja with impeachment over claims he’s targeting Mt Kenya businesspeople.

Former Nairobi governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko charged governor Sakaja on Monday, December 26, with disrespecting the second-in-command and ignoring the needs of the Nairobi residents.

Sonko credited DP Gachagua’s efforts, who courted the Mt. Kenya region’s substantial voting bloc, for helping Sakaja win the Nairobi governor’s seat.

Sonko defended his position by arguing that Sakaja’s choice to remove long-distance public service vehicles (PSV) from the CBD was bad for matatu operators and other business owners.

He further said that Sakaja had ordered the closure of bars and entertainment venues in residential neighborhoods as a means of punishing Nairobi businesses.

The former governor argued that Sakaja should respect the county assembly members’ decision to overturn his order to close loud clubs in Nairobi neighborhoods.

To send him home, Sonko threatened to collect impeachment signatures from Nairobi electorates.

“If Sakaja continues to harass Nairobi business people we will mobilize people and send him home. We can also make the city ungovernable for him and finally send him home just like the first governor,” Sonko stated.

At the same time, Sonko accused Sakaja of disloyalty to the United Democratic Alliance and its party leaders.

“Governor Sakaja is working with and helping people who never helped him to power. He is disloyal to UDA and its leadership,” he insisted.

Sonko’s remarks came only a few days after Gachagua accused Sakaja of undermining Mount Kenya businesspeople by moving PSV operations from the Nairobi CBD to Green Park Terminus.

Gachagua criticized the newly elected governor and pleaded with him to defend the businessmen who supported him.

“We are the ones who chose him. I’m the one who directed some voters to support him. Some decisions that he makes and are likely to spoil businesses in Nairobi, we must sit with him and agree on them,” Gachagua stated.

“We don’t want to move with such speed. Any decision to remove matatus will not be allowed; that is not possible. I don’t want to disturb the traders,” he added.

However, Governor Sakaja hit back and vowed to stick to his guns and carry out what is best for everyone, asking cartels, powerful individuals, and other voices of impunity to find for another county to take over.

“There is a deep state in terms of statecraft…There are few people who make certain decisions…few individuals who have great influence over billions in resources…but state capture can never be louder than the voice of the people. We have the rule of law,” he stated during a past Citizen TV interview.
