Governor Amos Nyaribo’s supporters block Nyamira County Assembly offices gate with raw sewage ahead of impeachment motion.

The gates of Nyamira County Assembly were on Tuesday barricaded with bricks and faeces, just hours before Members of County Assembly (MCAs) were set to table an impeachment motion against the Governor Amos Nyaribo.

According to sources, the raw sewage had been poured at the entrance on Monday night.

It is reported that Governor Nyaribo’s supporters were responsible for the incident aimed at preventing the impeachment motion.

Police were deployed to the assembly in scores to prevent the escalation of chaos among supportes in the County

The officers ensured the safe access of the MCAs who were scheduled to debate the impeachment motion.

They also oversaw the clearing of the area and the removal of the gate’s barricades.

A small group of young people riding motorcycles staged a nonviolent protest against the planned impeachment of the second-term governor despite the heavy police presence.

Meanwhile, some 24 out of the 34 MCAs of Nyamira County Assembly signed the impeachment motion and last Thursday validated their signatures with the clerk and vowed not to turn back.

“We want to know why Nyamira town gets dark like a remote village at night yet there is money for development of street lights,” he explained as one of the grounds for impeachment.

The MCAs added that the governor had run down health facilities in the region remarking that only paracetamol was available in most public hospitals.

Religious leaders drawn from the county have unsuccessfully tried to mediate between the governor and the MCAs.

“We believe those spearheading the talks have gotten the reason why we are after impeaching the governor. We will table the motion. Above all, service delivery has been poor. The governor has failed to hold talks on how to improve service delivery,” they sad.

Governor Nyaribo, who spoke on Sunday during a church service, accused the MCAs of abusing their constitutional powers of impeachment.

”The impeachment clause was meant to tame wayward governors who have the proclivity to run down public institutions and resources. I have not done any of the violations outlined in the impeachment clause,” he said.
