Bata Kenya has issued a response following reports that one of its employees passed away while on duty at the company’s factory on Saturday, October 26, amid allegations of being denied leave.

In a statement on Thursday, October 31, Bata clarified that the employee, Joshua Muthoka, was declared dead upon arrival at Tigoni Hospital after he was transferred to the facility.

Bata Kenya Managing Director Benson Okumu disclosed that Muthoka had complained of stomach pains before he was assisted by his supervisor to seek medical attention at the Bata clinic.

He stated that the deceased collapsed minutes later while he was being attended at the clinic before he was transferred to Tigoni Hospital.

“On the day in question, Joshua reported experiencing stomach pains and was promptly assisted by his supervisor to seek medical attention at Bata Clinic.

“As he was being attended at the clinic during the examination and taking of vitals and not later than four minutes after his arrival, he suddenly collapsed and became unresponsive. He was immediately transferred to Tigoni Hospital where he was sadly declared dead on arrival and transferred to Tigoni Mortuary,” Okumu remarked.

The shoe company affirmed that it is committed to transparency and cooperation with the authorities in the investigations into the death of Muthoka.

Bata noted that it operates within the confines of the employment regulations and respects the rights of its employees at the workplace, dismissing reports that Muthoka was denied leave.

“A post mortem was conducted on Tuesday, October 29, in the presence of the family and although the results were non-conclusive, we continue to support the family to establish the actual cause of death.

“Bata Shoe Kenya operates within the confines of the employment regulations and respects the rights of employees at the workplace, including the right to take leave for whatever reason. To insinuate otherwise is unfortunate and can only be interpreted as an act of malice,” the Bata MD stated.

The company further affirmed that it undergoes regular safety and health audits and that it takes employees health and safety seriously.

One suspect linked to the murder of Wells Fargo HR manager Willis Ayieko dies after a shootout.

One suspect linked to the murder of Wells Fargo Human Resource Manager Willis Ayieko died following a shootout with the police in Gem Wagai, Siaya County.

In an update on X, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the female suspect died in hospital hours after the incident.

According to the DCI, the female suspect and her accomplice, who managed to escape, were found in possession of a gun that had been robbed from Ayieko on the night of his murder.

DCI said officers from Wagai Police Station flagged a vehicle being driven by the suspects after members of the public reported that the two had a gun in their vehicle, a Toyota Axio.

However, DCI said when the police tried to stop the vehicle, the male driver fired at the officers while speeding off, prompting a heightened car chase.

“This prompted a hot chase that ended at Adder Farm within Kagilo area, where the vehicle lost control and rolled over on the left side of the road.

Unfortunately, the driver managed to escape, leaving behind the female passenger, who was injured and unconscious,” DCI said in a statement.

The suspect was taken to a hospital in Yala but succumbed to her injuries hours later.

DCI has already arrested a suspect in Dandora linked to the brutal murder of Ayieko.

An autopsy conducted by the Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor at the Lee Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 29, revealed that Ayieko died as a result of head injuries.

According to the pathologist, there was some presence of bleeding in the brain.

Additionally, there were some bruises on his wrists to suggest that his killers tied his hands during the incident.

The autopsy results also detailed that animals ate some parts of the body after his killers discarded the body near Yala.

“There was bleeding to the brain. Other than that there were bruises on the wrists caused by some cuffs found on him. There were also missing tissues on the mouth, ear, and cheek. We found a dead crab on the clothes. We think they were targeting the soft parts of the body,” Oduor said.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has distanced itself from alleged abductions happening across the country.

The Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Mohamed Amin said their work is to arrest and present suspects to court.

Kenyans have questioned the DCI’s silence, claiming that they are involved in the reported abductions across the country.

Addressing the press Wednesday in Nairobi Amin, however, said that they uphold the constitution by exercising their mandate according to the law.

 “We uphold the constitutional rights, standards and the fundamental rights of freedom, we don’t abduct. If we arrest people, we take them to court,” DCI boss Amin said.

Amin further distanced the investigation agency from claims of conspiring with mobile providers to get the details of Kenyans.

This is after local media reported on the allegations of police using mobile phones to track Kenyans.

The DCI boss said the use of mobile phones constitutes only one percent of their investigations.

“Issues of police conspiring with mobile subscribers; we don’t do that completely. We don’t entirely rely on the mobile phones,” Amin said.

“The mobile phones analysis contributes to only one percent of our investigations. In most of the cases that we can successfully investigate, it is as a result of our forensic analysis and collection of crucial evidence.”

This comes at a time when abductions and femicide cases have risen in the country.

The National Police Service assured Kenyans of its commitment to addressing and investigating all femicide-related cases.

Highlighting the importance of timely conclusion of these cases, Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat noted that this ensures justice is served not only to the victims but also their families.

Lagat admitted that there has been a sharp rise in cases of murder and manslaughter as he called for concerted efforts to end it.

“We urge every member of society, including governmental, civil, and religious leaders, to engage in this crucial dialogue,” he said. “Collective action can help us to eradicate the scourge of femicide and safeguard the lives of our citizens,” he added.

Lagat disclosed that in the last three months alone, they have recorded 97 cases of femicide reported in various parts of the country.

US Ambassador Meg Whitman responds after Kenyan police exposed for violating privacy rights over phone tracking.

The United States Ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman on Tuesday castigated Kenyan authorities over what she termed as a violation of the rights to privacy after a local Kenyan daily published an exposé of how the policy obtained key private details from individuals’ mobile phones.

According to Whitman, the decision of the police to get Kenyans’ private details when accessing private data was a breach of the law.

Speaking in Kitale while responding to questions fielded by journalists, the envoy added that it was important for the nation to respect the rule of law and privacy of her citizens.

“I don’t know enough about this issue yet. What I will say is that the laws of privacy and rule of law around the rights of a private citizen need to be respected in democracies,” Whitman cautioned.  

Whitman also called upon the concerned authorities to look into the matter even as more Kenyans have been complaining about a possible breach of privacy.

“Democracies and democratic rights are things that we share with Kenya. I am certain that people will look into this situation. I think we should take it very seriously.” she added.

Whitman described that the United States of America was concerned about the declining freedoms and human rights that have been witnessed in Kenya over the recent months.

However, she revealed that her country had already embarked on a strategy to work with the Kenyan government to promote the rights of individuals in the country.

She added that the strategy would also encompass civil society groups to promote the rights of all Kenyans and those living with disabilities.

Whitman at the same time urged the government to end all forms of human rights violations. She added that it was important for protesters to be allowed to express their views without any limitations. 

The ambassador’s comments come at a time when she and her country have been facing criticism from Kenyans over their silence when instances of police brutality were recorded at the height of the anti-government protests in June this year.

Kenyans have also been apprehensive about reports that suggest that authorities access key private data to conduct abductions.

An autopsy conducted by the Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor has revealed what caused the death of Wells Fargo HR Willis Ayieko.

Ayieko was found dead after his family reported him missing. At the time of his death, the Wells Fargo boss had travelled to his rural home to attend a funeral.

Meanwhile, police have arrested one man in connection with the murder. Investigations are ongoing to establish other killers and the motive of the murder.

“The suspect identified as Victor Ouma Okoth was flushed out of his hideout in Nairobi’s Dandora Phase IV last night, where he had rented a house using proceeds of the heinous crime,” DCI reported.

The suspect (being held at Muthaiga Police Station) was placed at the scene of crime through forensic analysis, in the forensic-led investigation being conducted by a joint team of DCI’s Homicide, CRIB and Operations detectives.

A man has been handed a life sentence for defiling his nine-year-old mentally challenged daughter.

A man from Tana River County has been handed a life sentence for defiling his nine-year-old mentally challenged stepdaughter.

In a statement on Tuesday, October 29, by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), a court in Hola, Tana River, heard that the man lured the minor into the sexual activity while her mother was away.

According to the ODPP, the prosecution called six witnesses who testified and established a case against the accused person.

“Hola Resident Magistrate Mohamed Komora Said heard that the minor was lured into sexual activities by the convict when her mother was away.

“Hon. Kabanga convicted the accused on 30th September 2024, and he was consequently sentenced to life imprisonment on 28th October 2024, after the prosecution proved the case beyond reasonable doubt,” the ODPP remarked.

The man is said to have committed the act on September 14 and, according to the ODPP, the victim’s sister found them in the act.

“The court heard that the victim was defiled by the accused on the 14th of September 2022 after the victim’s sister stumbled on them in the act when she returned from school,” the ODPP remarked.

The ODPP further disclosed that when the victim’s mother returned home, she found the minor crying and had blood stains on her clothes.

“The victim’s mother also testified that she returned home and found the victim crying and upon examination, she noted her clothes had blood stains and this was collaborated by medical evidence,” the ODPP explained.

A suspect linked to the gruesome murder of Willis Ayieko, a Human Resource Manager at Wells Fargo Company has been arrested.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Tuesday morning identified Victor Ouma Okoth as a main suspect in the heinous act.

Detectives reported that Ouma was flushed out of his hideout in Nairobi’s Dandora Phase IV on Monday night. 

The suspect, who is now held at Muthaiga Police Station, is said to have rented a house using the proceeds of the crime.

“The suspect identified as Victor Ouma Okoth was flushed out of his hideout in Nairobi’s Dandora Phase IV last night, where he had rented a house using proceeds of the heinous crime,” DCI said in a statement.

“The suspect was placed at the scene of crime through forensic analysis, in the forensic-led investigation being conducted by a joint team of DCI’s Homicide, CRIB and Operations detectives,” the DCI stated.

Detectives also said that further investigations are ongoing to find Ouma’s accomplices. 

Ayieko’s body was discovered on October 23, 2024, in the Mungowere stream in Yala, Siaya County, five days after he went missing following a burial vigil.  

Eyewitnesses reported severe mutilation; his eyes were gouged out, his ears and nose were cut off, and his mouth was disfigured.

Ayieko had attended a funeral in Gem and was last seen leaving the event around 10 PM on October 18, 2024. 

His abandoned vehicle was found nearby, with CCTV footage capturing two men discarding it at a petrol station.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has announced plans to reward Kenyans for information that will lead to the arrest of suspected serial killer Collins Jumaisi.

In a notice released on Monday, October 28, the investigative body indicated that a significant cash reward would be given to those who provide information on the suspected whereabouts.

DCI maintained that Jumaisi was a wanted individual given that he escaped from police custody during investigations of the Kware dumpsite murders.

“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is seeking the public’s help in providing information that could assist in the re-arrest of Collins Jumaisi Khalusha. He was scheduled to be charged with murder but escaped from police custody on Monday, 20/8/2024,” read the notice in part.

“A significant cash reward will be provided to anyone with credible information leading to the suspect’s arrest. The suspect is from Shiru Sub-location, Shaviringa Location, Hamisi Sub-county in Vihiga County.”

Therefore, Kenyans with information on the whereabouts of the suspected serial killer were urged to make a report at any police station in the country.

Information on the suspect’s whereabouts can be reported confidentially to the anonymous #FichuaKwaDCI hotline at 0800722203 or the police hotlines 999, 911, and 112, or to any police station in the Republic,” DCI added.

Jumaisi was last seen at the Gigiri Police Station where he escaped from police custody in August.

In earlier reports by the police, the suspected serial killer confessed to having killed over 40 women over the years.
