Five KCPE candidates drown in Eldoret dam after a fun day as part of exam preparation turns out tragic.

Tragedy struck a primary school in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu on Saturday when five class eight pupils drowned at a man-made dam.

According to the police, the pupils had ventured to the Amazement park as part of preparations for the exams that start Monday.

The venture was was meant to be a fun day for the KCPE candidates of Arap Moi Primary School in Tarakwa, Uasin Gishu county but turned tragic after the boat they were sailing in capsized.

According to a police report, the five were part of a group of Standard Six and Standard Eight pupils accompanied by teachers to a hotel for recreational activities.

The report said that upon arriving at the site on Saturday at around 5pm, some pupils boarded a boat whose path was a manmade dam and the boat capsized.

All the five Standard Eight pupils drowned, and one Standard Six pupil survived.

“Only one of those who were in the boat and who is a class six pupil survived, “police said.

The survivor was taken to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital with acute low levels of oxygen.

Angry parents of the pupils stormed the school seeking to know the whereabouts of their kin.

Police said tension remained high in the area, forcing the sub-county security committee to be summoned for an emergency meeting on how to handle the crisis.

Kenya Certificate of Primary Examinations (KCPE) and the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) will run from October 30 to November 24.

About 1.4 million are KCPE candidates, with 1.2 million KAPSEA candidates while 903,260 will sit for the KCSE exams.
