According to Ukrainian counter-intelligence, a probable assassination attempt against President Volodymyr Zelensky was thwarted.
According to Ukraine’s UNIAN news agency, a group of Russian saboteurs led by a secret service operative were caught in the city of Uzhhorod, on the border between Ukraine, Slovakia, and Hungary.
The gang of about 25 individuals was also entrusted with carrying out acts of sabotage in Ukraine’s government area and other sections of the country, according to reports.
The men were apparently going to disguise themselves as members of the Ukrainian military forces in order to get access to Kiev.
The report, however, could not be verified independently.
The Ukrainian government alleges that Russian spy squads have attempted to reach Kiev and assassinate Ukraine President Zelensky many times since the start of the war, but to no success.
On March 2, 2022, a squad of elite Chechen special forces known as Kadyrovites was intercepted and eliminated on the outskirts of Kyiv, ostensibly on a secret mission to assassinate Zelensky.
Oleksiy Danilov, Ukraine’s Secretary of National Security and Defense Council, acknowledged the foiled covert operation during a broadcast marathon on Ukrainian TV stations.
He said that Ukrainian intelligence acted on a tip from “fifth columnists” in the Kremlin who opposed the deadly conflict.
Meanwhile, in the face of rising violence against civilians, Zelensky has urged his country’s citizens to continue fighting Russian soldiers.
In a video message released on Monday, Zelensky urged Ukrainians to do everything they can to protect their country, stating that intruders must be evicted in order to restore peace and security to the Ukrainian people.
He referred to the Russian military as “tourists with tanks” and “slaves to their propaganda, which has changed their consciousness”.
