Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi’s casual use of “Engineer” prefix title has irked those with proper academic credentials to own the title.
Engineer Shammah Kiteme, the president of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK), took issue with the lawmaker’s use of the title despite not having been properly trained as an engineer.
On Saturday, December 21, Sudi graced the graduation ceremony at The Eldoret National Polytechnic, where he was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Leadership, Administration, and Management from Northwestern Christian University.
The honorary certificate had the ‘Engineer’ title preceding Sudi’s name, catching the attention of the IEK president.
In a tweet, Kiteme cautioned Sudi against using their title, yet he is known to have the academic background requisite for an engineer, adding that the title is protected by law.
“Please note the initial Eng. before anyone’s name is protected by law; Engineers Act 2011. It takes at least 8 years of hard work to earn it. Oscar Sudi, please stop this disrespectful use of a title you haven’t earned,” said Kiteme.
Sudi’s academic standing has previously been a subject in court, where he as accused of forgery of certificates.

The case was however thrown out for lack of sufficient evidence.
He joined a list of several notable figures honoured with honorary degrees in recognition of their exceptional contributions to society in 2024.
Notably, Faith Kipyegon, the three-time Olympic champion, was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Education Degree (Honoris Causa) by the University of Eldoret.
The accolade acknowledged her remarkable achievements in athletics and her dedication to empowering girls and women through charitable initiatives.
Similarly, Bowling Green State University in the United States posthumously awarded an honorary Doctor of Public Service degree to James Karugu, Kenya’s second Attorney General.
The honour recognized his significant contributions to the legal field and public service.
