Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man in attendance as William Ruto is sworn in as President of the Republic of Kenya.
Aliko Dangote, the richest man in Africa and a billionaire from Nigeria, was one of the dignitaries present for the inauguration of President-elect William Ruto at the Kasarani stadium in Nairobi.
As visitors arrived on Tuesday, Dangote was seen sitting a few meters behind Chief Justice Martha Koome.
President William Ruto and Dangote have history.
They two met in March 2014 when Ruto-then deputy president visited Dangote Cement’s Obajana plant in Kogi state in Nigeria.
The Nigerian tycoon had previously tried to invest in Kenya by planning to build a cement factory in the local market.
His firm Dangote Cement, however, delayed its entry into the Kenyan market without giving the reasons for the change of plans.
But in a reported conversation with Kenyan journalist Jeff Koinange, he allegedly revealed that he shelved plans to extend his vast business empire to Kenya after being put off by top decision-makers in the country whom he has described as “more corrupt than Nigerians.”
“There Is local capacity in Africa to be able to harness resources,” Ruto said in 2014 during his visit to Nigeria.
Dangote who looked into joining the Kenyan market said: “Kenya’s market is very important to us and we will start immediately we get our licenses, which are about to be ready.”
Meanwhile, Willliam Samoei Ruto was sworn in as the fifth president of the Republic of Kenya.
Ruto took the oath of office on Tuesday, September 13, at the Moi International Sports Centre in a ceremony conducted by Judiciary registrar Anne Amadi and witnessed by Chief Justice Martha Koome.
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta handed over the Constitution to Ruto as part of the instruments of power.
Uhuru watched as his blue presidential standard was lowered on one pole while the presidential standard of the new commander was hoisted.
Immediately after receiving the instruments of power, KDF welcomed the new president with the ceremonial 21-gun salute
The Constitution is handed over as a symbol that the country is governed by the rule of law, which is supposed to be the guide in the choices the President makes.
The ceremonial sword which is traditionally kept at the office of the President in Harambee House was handed over.
