Biden issues four demands to Uhuru’s delegation mediating on Ethiopian-Tigray peace talks in South Africa.
As Uhuru’s delegation headed to South Africa to mediate peace negotiations between the Ethiopian government and the Tigrayan regional authority, the US government issued four conditions to the delegation on Tuesday, October 25.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken first directed the team to ensure there is an immediate end to hostilities between the warring parties.
Additionally, the US requested that the delegation guarantee the uninterrupted distribution of humanitarian aid to everyone in need.
The government of President Joe Biden also instructed the team to put safeguards in place to protect Ethiopian citizens.
AU High Representative for the Horn of Africa Olusegun Obasanjo, former Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo Ngcuka of the Republic of South Africa, and Uhuru were further asked to ensure Eritrea pulls out of northern Ethiopia.
“I have spoken with Kenyan President Ruto, South African Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Pandor, and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy to convey the urgency of ending this conflict now,” Blinken further stated.
“I will continue to consult with the AU on forging a political resolution to this destabilizing conflict,” his statement added.
At the same time, Blinken reached out to the warring factions arguing that military action was worsening the situation and affecting communities in the region.
The war began in November 2020 following a massive fallout between the Tigray regional government and Ethiopian federal administration.
Multiple deaths and displacement of thousands of residents were reported after the war ensued.
