Government to redesign Nairobi CBD (Central Business District), and build an underground tunnel in Ksh 236B Plan.

On Tuesday, March 7, Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) provided an update on its intention to construct an underground tunnel connecting Green Park terminus and Haile Selassie Avenue.

The designs would be used in the development of Kenya Railway Central Station, according to Kenya Railways Managing Director Philip Maingi, who spoke before the Committee on Transport and Infrastructure.

A public realm, viaduct bridges, and covered pedestrian bridges will also be constructed.

The revised proposal, according to Maingi, will incorporate non-motorized transportation on Workshop Road and Enterprise Road.

After Kenya Railway Central Station is finished in 2025, a project to give Nairobi a new look will be funded with Ksh236 billion.

“The project is of great National significance as it forms part of the core strategy for the regeneration of Nairobi Railway Station and the surrounding areas which will ultimately improve the face of Nairobi city,” Maingi stated.

Besides changing the city’s design, it is also expected to spur economic growth by creating employment opportunities and improving Nairobi’s transport sector.

The project is further expected to be spurred by the construction of the Nairobi Railway City, supported by the UK government.

According to Maingi, the Nairobi Railway City project will commence with constructing a pedestrian footbridge across the Nairobi Railway yard.

“The pedestrian footbridge across the Nairobi Railway Yard will be all-weather, modern, and accessible to people with disabilities,” Mainga stated during the project’s groundbreaking.

Safe parking spaces, shades, and walkways will also be incorporated in the project set to alter the design of Nairobi CBD to meet the current standards and residents’ demands.

Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen flew to the UK to fast-track the project, where he met with different government officials and experts tasked to build Nairobi Railway City.
