Activist Boniface Mwangi has been sentenced to two months in prison after being found guilty of contempt of court in a case involving Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua.
In a statement via X on Wednesday, November 1, Mwangi announced he was given an alternative of paying a fine of Ksh 300,000.
“I have been found guilty of contempt of court. Sentenced to two months in prison or pay a fine of Ksh 300,000,” he stated.
Boniface Mwangi also revealed that the court extended a gag order blocking him from mentioning the person who allegedly bombed his home.
“The gag order was extended to January 2024. l can no longer post who bombed our home. Water is wet, the pope is Catholic, and everyone knows who bombed our home,” he added.
Mr. Mwangi was accompanied by Azimio Principal Martha Karua and former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga to the ruling.
Mwangi had been sued by CS Mutua through his lawyer Harrison Kinyanjui for defamation after the activist accused the former Machakos Governor of bombing his house.

Mwangi denied defaming the Tourism CS but failed to appear in court twice in the defamation case.
CS Mutua’s lawyers then filed a contempt of court suit against the activist.
“Mwangi disobeyed the order on 6th and 9th January 2022 by publishing on his Twitter account content against Governor Mutua,” Kinyajui told the court.
On October 21, 2021, Mwangi took to X (formerly Twitter) saying “I’m a resident of Machakos County. An hour ago……thugs have bombed my house (under construction), sank the foundation, and robbed my workers, “he said.
“I can’t go there now for safety reasons. I know it’s Mutua because he is a molester. & an abusive man. He won’t silence me!” Mwangi posted while tagging the then-governor, Alfred Mutua.
