Embattled UoN Vice Chancellor Prof. Kiama sent on compulsory leave again

University of Nairobi (UoN) Vice-Chancellor Prof. Stephen Kiama sent on yet another compulsory leave, barely a month after he dismissed a similar directive by the institution's council
University of Nairobi (UoN) Vice-Chancellor Prof. Stephen Kiama sent on yet another compulsory leave, barely a month after he dismissed a similar directive by the institution’s council.
The UoN Council made the announcement on Tuesday saying Prof. Ayub Njoroge Gitau who was appointed in an acting capacity last month will continue serving in the position.
Council Chairperson Amukowa Anangwe said the directive followed an April 19, 2024 decision to send Prof. Kiama on compulsory leave over allegations of mismanagement of the university’s resources and intimidation of staff.
“The council of the University of Nairobi, as the employer, is deeply concerned about the continued harassment, intimidation, and misuse of staff and resources by unauthorized persons, despite its earlier pronouncement on the matter,” Prof Anangwe stated as quoted by the Nation.
The UoN council also resolved that there would be fresh letters issued authorizing the performance of duties in 24 administrative positions.

Staff members who had been affected by the leadership standoff at the university and all staff transfers and movements that were effected contrary to the council have been directed to immediately resume their previous stations.
Following the April leave communiqué, Prof. Kiama trashed the reports and urged all members and students to ignore the directive.
“This matter has elicited a lot of publicity and has the potential to lead to apprehension to both members of staff and students,” said Kiama at the time.
“In the meantime, I call on all of us to recommit to the task ahead of driving the university to a truly globally competitive university transforming society.”
