NTSA issues directives to matatu operators ahead of schools' closing date

National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has issued a warning to all Public Service Vehicles (matatu operators) ahead of the official schools' closing date

National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has issued a warning to all Public Service Vehicles (matatu operators) ahead of the official schools’ closing date.

In a statement on Monday, Samuel Musumba the NTSA Safety Manager revealed that the Authority, with help from different government agencies including the National Police Service (NPS), will increase surveillance on the roads to ensure the safety of the children.

“The Road Safety Manager and Head of Safety Strategies warned illegal matatu operators saying NTSA and police will heighten surveillance to ensure safety during this season,” read part of the statement.

He also warned drivers about the ongoing rains and changing weather conditions which would the impair the vision of motorists heading to different parts of the country.

“We would like the vehicles carrying these children to be in the best condition. We understand that some of these vehicles are yet to undergo inspection,” he added.

The authority further cautioned drivers of increased traffic as a result of students travelling to various destinations.

During this time, Musumba called out matatu owners putting their needs ahead of the students’ safety. He warned them against overloading students which he pointed out contributes to increased accidents.

Additionally, Musumba called upon school heads to inspect the vehicles picking up students to guarantee their safety.

He also addressed concerns about students being rowdy while on these PSVs. Musumba emphasised that NTSA will be monitoring the roads to apprehend those breaking the law.

The official revealed that NTSA will deal with the respective schools of each student found misbehaving on the roads as witnessed in the past.

Musumba cautioned against speeding as some drivers attempt to make extra trips to increase their income. He assured that the Authority will take action on all matatus found violating these guidelines.

In the past months, several accidents including students coming home for the holidays were reported with some resulting in casualties and critical injuries.
