Azimio to expel Raila and ODM over his deal with Ruto

Affiliate parties plan to expel the ODM party and Raila Odinga from the Azimio coalition over his deal with Ruto

Affiliate parties plan to expel the ODM party and Raila Odinga from the Azimio coalition over his deal with Ruto.

Cracks continue to widen in the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party following the deal between President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga.

In the latest development, the Democratic Action Party Kenya (DAP-K) has asked the Azimio la Umoja governing council to expel Raila-led ODM from the coalition. DAP-K accused the ODM leader of going to bed with the government without the knowledge of the coalition’s affiliate parties

The party led by Eugene Wamalwa stated during its National Executive Council meeting that DAP-K is committed to its opposition role and unwilling to continue collaborating with Raila.

“The NEC has instructed me to notify the Azimio One Kenya Coalition that ODM should formally exit the coalition due to its close association with the Kenya Kwanza government,” Wamalwa said after the NEC meeting.

Wamalwa said DAP-K will remain on the side of ordinary Kenyans and will support Gen Z and millennials in their push for reforms.

In addition, three parties — PNU, Jubilee, and DAP-K revealed that Azimio’s chair, former President Uhuru Kenyatta, has convened a meeting which will be used to discuss the coalition’s future.

They want to explore options that would better enable the coalition to oversee and keep in check the Kenya Kwanza administration.

Jubilee Party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni on his part accused ODM of double standards, which he argues is against the spirit of the 2010 constitution.

The former Ndaragua MP added that some leaders have continued to invoke retired President Uhuru’s name to validate themselves.

Kioni said the broad-based government is meant to continue to oppress Kenyans since President Ruto has secured more people from opposition.

There have major cracks within the Azimio coalition after its leader Raila Odinga offered his key allies for appointment to Ruto’s cabinet.

Hassan Joho, John Mbadi, Wycliffe Oparanya and Opiyo Wandayi are some of the opposition leaders who have since been appointed cabinet secretaries.
