Police officers in Eldoret are investigating an incident in which a man hacked his mother to death at MaIli Nne Estate on the outskirts of the city.
The deceased was a prominent Muslim businesswoman at West Indies Estate, where she operated for many years.
Her body has since been transported to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary as detectives work to uncover the full details surrounding the tragedy.
Police said the man later attempted to commit suicide by taking poison but he was found in critical condition and taken for treatment at the Moi Referral Hospital.
Residents said the two who lived in their home were not known to have any quarrels and the incident had shocked them.

Uasin Gishu police boss Benjamin Mwanthi said police had visited the scene and were investigating the cause of the killing.
In another incident at the neighbouring Huruma Estate in the same area a woman stabbed her husband to death after a domestic quarrel in their rental house last night.
Residents said the two had been frequently quarrelling leading to a fight last night in which the woman piked a knife and stabbed the man who died on the spot.
Mwanthi said they were also investigating the Huruma incident.
The suspect in the murder case has been arrested and is being held at the Eldoret Central Police Station.
