Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has announced the temporary closure of Terminal 1E at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
In a statement on Tuesday, October 8, KAA said the terminal will be closed starting Thursday, October 10 for rehabilitation works.
Following the temporary closure, KAA said affected airlines will be processed through Terminal 1A.
“This decision has been made in order to ensure the safety of our staff and passengers during the renovation process. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this time,” KAA said in a statement.
In March 2024, a fire incident occurred at the terminal following an electrical fault.
KAA reported that the fire was quickly contained, with no injuries or casualties.

As a precaution, power to the terminal was shut off, and all flight operations were redirected to Terminal 1A.
The terminal serves as a dedicated international arrivals terminal, primarily accommodating passengers arriving on airlines such as British Airways, Qatar Airways, and Emirates.
Terminal 1E features essential facilities including immigration and customs checkpoints, ensuring a streamlined process for incoming travelers.
Additionally, it is strategically located within the semi-circular layout of Terminal 1, allowing easy access to other terminals (1A, 1B, and 1C) for connecting flights.
As part of JKIA’s ongoing expansion efforts under Kenya’s Vision 2030, Terminal 1E plays a crucial role in managing the increasing passenger traffic, which aims to reach over 25 million annually by 2025.
