Tana River Governor Dhadho Godhana, Galole MP Said Hiribae arrested over deadly clashes

Tana River Governor Dhadho Godhana, Galole MP Said Hiribae arrested over deadly clashes.

Tana River Governor Dhadho Godhana and Galole MP Said Hiribae were arrested late Friday, October 11, over their alleged roles in the escalating inter-clan violence in the county.

The violence, which has already claimed 14 lives, has resulted in drastic actions from the government throughout the area as authorities scramble to restore order.

Police confirmed that the two leaders had ignored earlier summons to assist in the investigation, prompting their arrest. Governor Godhana and MP Hiribae are now en route to Nairobi, where they will be questioned by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) regarding the deadly clashes that have rocked the region.

As tension mounts, DCI Director Mohamed Amin called the arrests a critical step in getting to the bottom of the violence. While several other local leaders had responded to summons, the governor and MP had failed to do so, further stalling the investigation. Authorities hope that their questioning will shed light on the root causes of the ongoing violence.

“It is true we have arrested Tana River Governor and Galole MP Said Hiribae. The two politicians were summoned to our offices over the ongoing clashes in Tana River but they failed to honor summons,” stated Mohamed.

“We are looking forward to prosecuting those who will be found culpable over what is being witnessed in Tana River, when we are through with the probe.”

The arrests follow a string of interrogations involving three other leaders from Tana River County. Among those questioned were Garsen MP Ali Wario, Bura MP Yakub Adow, and local ward representative Mohammed Jibril.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki stepped in esponse to the unrest, declaring 12 locations in Tana River County as “dangerous and security disturbed.” His declaration is part of a broader move to stabilise the volatile region, where tensions between rival clans have erupted into violent clashes.

The violence, which began over a dispute at a watering point, has now spread to nearby villages, forcing hundreds of residents to flee.

The areas now under the security order include Madogo, Areri, and Mbalambala in Bangale Sub-County, alongside Hirimani, Nanighi, and Chewele in Tana North Sub-County. Kindiki’s declaration, which took effect on Friday, is set to last for the next 30 days, during which the government will ramp up security and impose stricter controls on the possession of weapons.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja wasted no time in reinforcing the government’s stance. He ordered residents to surrender any firearms they possess, promising that they would be returned once the security situation stabilises. The move is part of a wider disarmament effort designed to reduce the risk of further bloodshed in the region.
