Making the announcement in the House, Senate Deputy Speaker Kathuri Murungi noted that the session was adjourned until 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
The Meru senator disclosed that after the quorum bell rang for 10 minutes, the Senate did not have a quorum to conduct business.
“Honourable senators, there being no quorum and having rung the bell pursuant to provisions of the Senate Standing Order 40 subsection 2, the Senate stands adjourned until later today, 15th October 2024, at 2:30 p.m.,” Murungi stated.
According to the Senate Standing Orders, a minimum of 15 senators should be in the chamber before any business is transacted.

“If there is no quorum present when the Chair is taken at the time appointed for a sitting of the Senate, the Speaker shall, immediately after the prayer, order the bell to be rung for ten minutes.
“If no quorum is present at the expiration of the ten minutes, the Speaker may direct that the bell be rung for a further ten minutes and if there is still no quorum present, the Speaker shall adjourn the Senate forthwith to the next sitting,” Senate Standing Order 40 states.
This comes even as the Senate prepares to hear the charges against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua after he was impeached by the National Assembly on Tuesday last week.
Gachagua will defend himself before the Senate plenary on Wednesday, October 16 and Thursday, October 17.
