TSC boss Nancy Macharia has revealed that the Commission has found challenges in recruiting teachers for science subjects

TSC boss Nancy Macharia has revealed that the Commission has found challenges in recruiting teachers for science subjects.

Speaking during a meeting with the National Assembly Committee on Education on Wednesday, October 23, Macharia detailed that few teachers had trained in science subjects.

She noted that most graduates had undertaken arts studies hence the scarcity of science subjects.

The TSC boss detailed that some vacancies would often go unfilled during recruitment because there are no applicants.

“We are not saying that these teachers are not trained but the majority of teachers who come from the colleges including the universities have studied arts,” she detailed.

“People who go for higher qualifications also go for arts.”

When asked how TSC was working to fill the gaps, she detailed that they had issued advisories to the Ministry of Education and Universities to encourage more students to take up science subjects.

Meanwhile, Macharia announced that TSC would employ all the teachers who were interns in Junior Secondary Schools.

Additionally, the Commission will employ other teachers in January following the application that was done early in the month.

Over 314,000 graduates applied for the vacancies that were announced by TSC recently. TCS was seeking to recruit 46,000 new teachers countrywide.
