Moi University announces reopening date

Moi University will reopen on Thursday, November 7, and students will be allowed to report back to the institution on Friday, November 8

Moi University will reopen on Thursday, November 7, and students will be allowed to report back to the institution on Friday, November 8.

In a statement, Moi University Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof. Isaac Kosgey detailed a programme of activities before the reopening of the university.

Kosgei stated that the university management board held a consultative meeting with the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) and the Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU) on Saturday, November 2.

The VC further disclosed that a similar meeting will be held on Monday, November 4, before another negotiation meeting on Tuesday.

At the same time, Kosgei noted that there will be a negotiation meeting and signing of the Return-to-Work Formula (RTWF) with UASU and KUSU on Wednesday, November 6.

“Further communication will follow in due course,” Prof. Kosgei remarked.

Higher Education Principal Secretary Dr. Beatrice Inyangala maintained that officials from the State Department will be at Moi University to welcome back the students.

“Moi University reopens! This is the schedule of activities leading to the reopening of Moi University. The State Department for Higher Education and Research will be at Moi University on Friday, November 8, 2024, to welcome the students back to the university,” Inyangala stated.

On October 3, Moi University was closed indefinitely following a prolonged lecturers’ strike that led to the strike of the students.

The lecturers and workers at the institution downed their tools over delayed salaries, something that crippled learning at the university.

Meanwhile, on Friday, November 1, Moi University refuted reports that it was planning to transfer its students to other universities over allegations of financial difficulties.

Moi University VC Kosgei stated that the institution was committed to providing quality education and ensuring that students continued with learning smoothly without disruption.]
