Former CJ Willy Mutunga now says the next president of Kenya should be a Gen Z or millennial.
Retired Chief Justice Willy Mutunga has suggested that Kenya’s next president should be a young person from Generation Z or a millennial-aged between 27 and 43 years.
The CJ Emeritus argued that politicians from his generation are often tribalistic and unsuitable to continue leading the country.
“I think the next alternative leadership must come from Gen Zs and millennials, not our generation who go the usual way of tribalism and so forth. I saw a bit of that as CJ where the Kambas thought that the Judiciary was theirs and didn’t want us to build courts in Lodwar and other places,” he said.

Speaking at an event celebrating 12 years of the Supreme Court under the new Constitution, Mutunga also emphasized the importance of an independent Judiciary.
He urged citizens to support the Judiciary, describing it as the only arm of government that protects Kenyans’ rights.
“There are now two offices of former CJs and now we are getting funding; the offices of former CJs should play that role of protecting the independence of the Judiciary,” he added.
Additionally, he proposed the establishment of an official office for retired Chief Justices to help safeguard the Constitution.
