Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) members have raised concerns over the ongoing promotion of teachers by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
Addressing a press briefing on Thursday, KUPPET officials took an issue with the criteria used to allocate the promotion slots terming it unfair and discriminatory.
The union also faulted the Commission for distributing the slots unequally across all counties.
As a result, the protestors demanded the Commission to fill the available slots on a pro-rata basis.
KUPPET, through Secretary General Moses Nthurima, also accused TSC of unfair promotions and distribution of teachers and resources arguing that there was unequal distribution of teachers.
According to Nthurima, the unfair distribution may be informed by political reasons.
“We want to see the commission allocate proportionately the slots of promotion which means the counties that have gotten the highest number of teachers must get the highest number of slots so that we act fairly in terms of spreading,” Nthurima revealed.
“For that, we are demanding that the Teachers Service Commission use pro-rata to ensure that teachers are treated equally,” he continued.
KUPPET decried that the mission that was intended to improve staffing in the hardship area has turned out to be a major cause of inequality in teaching services.

Nthurima further revealed that in the appraisal format, the TSC is confirming teachers who have acted in administrative positions for only six months while more qualified teachers were left out.
TSC was blamed for putting consideration and emphasis on ASAL areas at the expense of populous regions.
The Commission, thus, was asked to consider those who have served long in whatever region so that the emphasis is not put on regions but on teachers with longer experience.
The promotions came after KUPPET had raised an issue over how long the promotions had taken. Teachers had complained that teachers who were to be promoted had stagnated for long.
