There was chaos in Uasin Gishu County as goons attempted to disrupt an event in front of dignitaries including governors.

On Sunday, February 2, a fundraiser was held at Moi’s Bridge Township for victims of a devastating fire that razed down property worth millions on Saturday, January 1.

Moi’s Bridge is a famous cosmopolitan town located several kilometres from Eldoret on the way to Kitale, the headquarters of Trans Nzoia County. The town is located a short distance from where the famous River Nzoia crosses the Eldoret-Kitale Highway.

Several dignitaries, including Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi and Bomet Governor Prof. Hillary Barchok, attended the fundraiser, which started off smoothly.

However, the situation changed when Soy MP David Kiplagat arrived.

A scuffle ensured when Kiplagat was introduced, as goons stormed the podium to attempt to disrupt the event.

The situation deteriorated further when tens of residents also stormed the podium where political leaders were addressing them, as the confrontation threatened to turn ugly.

Police officers present at the event were forced to step in, but were overwhelmed briefly overwhelmed by the sheer number of citizens engaging in physical altercations at the venue.

While the source of the chaos is yet to be established with certainty, several UDA leaders at the event were adamant the goons who wanted to disrupt proceedings were paid by an area leader.

Sudi was particularly animated during his address on Sunday, as he fired a warning to an unnamed element regarding using youth to further divisive politics.

“I’m shocked. Instead of giving money to help the youth start businesses, we’re giving them money to fight and disrupt events. Let’s stop this politics of the old,” he said.

The vocal Kapseret lawmaker also hinted at cracks in the relationship among UDA leaders in Uasin Gishu by reiterating that he would help citizens beyond his constituency.

“We agreed as leaders of Uasin Gishu County that we would help all residents when there is the need,” Sudi reiterated.
