Retired president Uhuru Kenyatta has extended his condolences to the family of slain Nakuru human rights activist Richard Otieno.

Speaking during the memorial service on Wednesday, February 5, lawyer Dan Mwangi conveyed Uhuru’s heartfelt message to the bereaved family.

Mwangi said Uhuru sent KSh 500,000 to support Otieno’s grieving widow and children during this difficult time.

“Uhuru Kenyatta sent me to represent him. When Richard was killed, I informed him of our history together, and he was deeply saddened. He was very unhappy that Richard was brutally murdered, leaving behind a young family. He sympathises greatly with you,” Mwangi stated, adding, “He sent me with KSh 500,000 to support Richard’s family, especially his children, and to convey his solidarity with you during this difficult time.”

He assured the family that the funds would be used responsibly to support the widow and children, in honour of Otieno’s legacy of accountability.

Mwangi, also a close associate of the late activist, reminisced about their work together during the 2017 and 2022 election campaigns, as well as during the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) debates, where Otieno actively supported the former president.

Demanding justice for the slain activist, Mwangi urged authorities to conduct thorough investigations and ensure those responsible are held accountable.

“He was my dear friend. During the 2017 re-election, he played a crucial role in our campaign, and in 2022, he stood firmly with us during the Azimio la Umoja campaigns for Raila Odinga and Martha Karua. He was also instrumental in championing BBI, which Uhuru pushed for to improve our economy. It is not enough to just bury him and move on. We must ensure justice prevails,” Mwangi emphasised.

He further questioned the motive behind the attack and urged investigators to go beyond the arrested suspects to identify and expose those who financed the killing.

Otieno was attacked and killed on January 18 while heading home to Elburgon after watching an English Premier League (EPL) match.

His assailants ambushed him near his residence, just minutes after he had called his wife to open the gate.

Before his death, Otieno was a vocal critic of the area Member of Parliament and an advocate for human rights.

He had also participated in anti-finance bill protests, which led to his arrest after part of the MP’s home was set on fire.

Authorities suspected him of involvement in the incident.
