Kiraitu Murungi admits orchestrating Kawira Mwangaza impeachment

Former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi has confessed to being part of a group of Meru leaders that orchestrated the impeachment of former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza.

Speaking on Thursday, March 20, Murungi claimed that Mwangaza was fighting other Meru leaders including Members of the County Assembly and Members of Parliament.

“She was at war with all MPs, MCAs, and even those of us who were there before her, she went around everywhere insulting and embarrassing us. She was very arrogant. Now that she is gone, that’s why you see happiness in Meru,” said Murungi.

He went on to mention that Mwangaza pledged to uplift the people of Meru however she did not fulfil the promise in the two years she was the county boss.

“We realized that even if she is given ten years, Meru would continue to lag behind and remain stuck in the mud. As concerned Meru leaders, we saw it fit to help our people get out of this political mess. So, we united with other leaders, did what we could, and now she is at home,” Murungi added.

His remarks came after Mwangaza alleged that she was removed from office because she refused to be politically manipulated.

In a statement on Tuesday, March 18, Mwangaza said that her impeachment was orchestrated by national government officials and her political competitors.

“My impeachment was not a reflection of my performance or integrity but a calculated move by male chauvinists, political competitors, and for political expediency, a complicit National Government willing to silence a woman who dared to lead,” said Mwangaza.

The former governor claimed that she refused to bow to the pressures of political puppeteers who sought to use her office for their selfish gains.

Mwangaza said she would not be silenced and would pursue all legal avenues to clear her name and expose the injustices against her.

“In the coming days, I will be exploring all legal and constitutional avenues to challenge this injustice. I will also continue to engage with the people of Meru to ensure that their voices are heard and their needs are met,” she added.

On Friday, March 14, High Court Judge Justice Bahati Mwamuye upheld the Senate’s decision to impeach Mwangaza, stating that her petition to block her removal from office did not meet the required threshold to overturn the impeachment.

Following the ruling, Isaac Mutuma M’Ethingia was sworn in as the new Meru Governor in an event held at Mwendantu Grounds in Meru County.
