Two die in an accident on their way to ODM elections

Two people died in an accident on Monday, April 7, while on their way to the ODM grassroots elections.

The two were aboard a motorcycle, which collided with a lorry at Arujo Bridge along the Homa Bay-Rongo road in Homa Bay Town Constituency.

According to reports, the motorcycle was ferrying three people when it collided head-on with a lorry attached to a courier company. The third individual survived the accident but is in critical condition in the hospital.

One passenger died on the spot after the collision, while the other, who suffered multiple fractures, died while receiving treatment, according to Homa Bay Sub-county Police Commander Emmanuel Kiplagat.

Kiplagat further explained that the accident occurred when the lorry, which was attempting to overtake, misjudged the motorcycle’s distance at the notorious Arujo Bridge.

“The lorry driver had moved to the right side of the road to overtake, but unfortunately, he underestimated the distance with the oncoming motorcycle,” the Sub-county Police Commander revealed.

Authorities are still trying to establish the identities of the deceased, who were reportedly not carrying any form of identification at the time of the accident.

This was the latest accident, compounding a worrying trend in recent weeks of deadly road incidents, which incidentally rise on the dawn of holidays.

On Sunday evening, four members of a single family lost their lives in Siaya County after a car they were traveling in rammed into a stalled school bus. The four died on the spot along the Siaya-Nyadorera Road at Uranga.

Incidentally, the two Homa Bay accidents involved people on their way to participate in the ongoing ODM grassroots elections in Homa Bay, which has been marred by unfortunate incidents.

Earlier in the day, reports emerged that two other youths in Ndhiwa Constituency, Homa Bay, sustained serious hand injuries following violent clashes between rival sides. The incident took place in the same grassroots elections that the accident victims were heading to.

One of the victims of the mayhem was left with serious injuries after his left wrist was reportedly chopped off, while another one suffered neck cuts and a fractured arm.
