MP Peter Kaluma defends Ruto over transformer launch

MP Peter Kaluma defends Ruto over transformer launch
Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament Peter Kaluma on Wednesday, April 9, defended President William Ruto after he was invited to launch a transformer during his recent tour of the Western region.
While speaking in Parliament, Kaluma noted that Ruto’s launching a transformer was vital in ensuring power connectivity, adding that it was a cause for celebration.
While giving examples of several villages in his constituency, Kaluma asserted that the presence of a transformer was much welcomed in areas that have no power, such as his constituency.
“Honourable Speaker, some people joked about how a whole president is launching a transformer. The fact of the matter is that in some areas, seeing a transformer is huge. It makes lighting those rural communities very easy,” Kaluma stated.
“For some people, if they were to just get a transformer, it would be a cause for celebration, as they are well below the rate of connectivity,” he added.
The MP’s comments come after netizens and opposition politicians took issue with Ruto being invited to launch a transformer, citing that it did not reflect his position and the level of development expected from the Head of State.
Some even contrasted it with Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata, who has launched critical projects such as hospitals, roads, and smart cities.

Opposition leaders, such as former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, criticised the move, highlighting it as a reflection of the state of leadership and governance in the country.
Even so, Kaluma averred to seeing the bigger picture, noting that efforts, no matter how small, to ensure power connectivity were beneficial to a country’s improvement of its national grid.
“Any measure, Mr Speaker, that allows the country to improve on power distribution has a domino effect of lighting up the country,” he expressed.
The MP, allied to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, lauded the move by Ruto to launch the Last Mile connectivity project in Bungoma, noting that electricity was a vital cog in all operations.
“The fact of the matter, Honourable Speaker, is that parts of our economy which depend on electrical power, like the digital economy, cannot run without power supply,” Kaluma charged.
